Tomas.  A preschool education specialist, she was a school hymns composer and a nursery/kinder teacher for 27 years.  She has facilitated seminars on teaching reading and phonics and motivational teaching approaches.  She is currently the principal of Mary Toddlers’ School, Las Piñas City.  She is one of the authors of Abiva Preschool Series.

            A positive outlook in life and a positive attitude toward our chosen profession help a lot in making learning for students pleasant, productive, and meaningful.  With a good attitude, teaching becomes easier and more dynamic. 

What constitutes a positive attitude?  Versatility, dynamism, and commitment to the profession, good sense of humor, resilience, and faith in the face of disappointments and setbacks. 

Below are two “Positive Attitude” checklists for teachers and students.  Find out how you have been as a teacher in bringing about positive results in your students’ learning experiences. 

Positive Teacher Checklist

Check all the teaching practices which apply to you. 

Do you…

* provide opportunities for creativity and creative thinking.

* show sensitivity to students’ background learning styles and experiences.

* initiate change and makes learning interesting and innovative.

* train students to have faith in themselves and in their ideas.

* inspire students to give their best.

* exhibit patience.

* establish a non-threatening classroom atmosphere.

* take time to touch the lives of students struggling with personal issues.

* encourage active participation during classroom discussions.

* acknowledge and accept individual differences and unique personalities.

* constantly and continuously update yourself with the latest educational trends.

* appropriately handle students’ behavioral problems.

* extend help and assistance whenever and wherever needed in learning situations.

* respect opinions and suggestions of students and most of all their rights as children.

 

Positive Learner Checklist

Check all the behavioral indicators shown by your students.

Do your students

* perform well in class and are perceptive to learning

* express ideas and insights openly

* exhibit independence and flexibility

* quickly grasp ideas and concepts

* think critically in answering probing questions

* solve problems creatively

* accomplish tasks with pride and confidence

* know how to prioritize what is important and valuable

* attentively listen during classroom discussions

* show interest to gain new knowledge and insights

* engage in worthwhile learning activities

* actively participate in both academic and non-academic activities

* respond calmly to varied situations, stressful occasions, and unforeseen events

* never get bored in accomplishing tasks over prolonged periods of time

* clearly express ideas in both written and oral communication

* relate well with others and is responsive to others’ needs

           
If you have checked at least 10 of the descriptors in both lists, congratulations!  You are indeed a positive teacher to a positive learner!
